Full Spectrum Light and Heat Lights
Full spectrum light is very close to the color balance of sunlight at noon on a clear day. It has been shown to affect the health and well being of birds kept indoors. Full spectrum light simulates your pet bird's natural environment, bringing sunlight indoors. It is recommended by Veterinarians and behaviorists to alleviate depression, feather plucking and behavior problems.
Full spectrum bulbs are available from fluorescent to incandescent-we've tried them all-and we recommend and sell Vita-Lites, because of their superior light output, quality, affect and lifespan. We do not sell the incandescent bulbs because they are coated with a colored film to achieve "full-spectrum", leading to very low light output. Research suggests that the quantity of light reaching an animal's eye determines its effectiveness.
To enjoy the benefits of full spectrum light use fluorescents in fixtures without shades or covers of any kind. The fixture should be located at least 32" from your bird's favorite perch (probably no more than 6' away, but the research is inconclusive), and left on for at least 3 hours and no more than 11 hours each day.
